3 Admission and Registration
I、Admission
1. New International students admitted by DUT shall bring their Admission Notice, ID as well as other relevant documents and register in person at International Student Office, School of International Education before the deadline as specified in the Admission Notice. Those who are unable to register on time shall apply with necessary credentials for an extension of up to two weeks to the International Student Office of School of International Education before the registration date. Students who do not submit a notice for an extension as required or fail to complete the registration within the extension period without valid reasons such as force majeure will be automatically taken as having given up their admission eligibility.
2. In the first month after the new international students ’admission, a qualification reexamination will be implemented as required by the government regulations for recruiting students. The reexamination will include a verification of the students’ admission qualification and the submission of Physical Examination Record for Foreigner or a physical examination.
The students who pass the reexamination can proceed to register and get their status as an enrolled student of DUT. Those who fail will be disqualified from admission.
Those who are found to have practiced fraud or deception will be deprived of their admission qualifications and student status upon verification of the irregularities.
II、Registration
1. The students who pass the reexamination shall register to get their status as an enrolled student of DUT. During registration, they will be asked to fill in the International Students Information Card (two copies) as well as the Student Identity Card.
2. Current students must register both online and in person with their student cards at the faculty (school) where their academic programs are conducted within the specified period at the beginning of each semester so as to renew their status as an enrolled student in the new semester. Those who are unable to register on time shall apply with necessary credentials for permission of later registration to the International Student Office of School of International Education and the administrative office of their faculty (school) before the registration date, or else they will be treated as truants. Students who do not submit an application for permission as required, or whose application is not approved, or who fail to register two weeks after the required date will be taken as having given up their student status.
3. Before registering in the first semester of each academic year, self-funded students shall pay the relevant fees including tuition fee, accommodation fee and insurance. Those who fail to make the payment in time cannot register or take their courses.
4 Academic Credits and Courses
I、Academic Credits
The required number of academic credits international students in different programs must complete in order to graduate is specified in the International Student Training Curriculum (new) of their programs. International students shall complete their programs' courses and obtain the total number of credits according to the specific academic plan of their programs.
The adjustments made in the International Student (Undergraduates) Training Curriculum (new)
1. International students are exempt from taking “political education platform courses”, but they must take the course “A Survey of China”.
2. International students are exempt from completing the military training and military theory courses and are not required to obtain the relevant academic credits.
3. International students are exempt from “foreign language platform courses” (including the second foreign language course for foreign language majors), but they must take the course “Fundamental Chinese”. Those whose have taken HSK and obtained required results (for students in programs of engineering, economics, and management, the HSK result should be 195 or above; for students in programs of humanities or foreign languages, the HSK result should be 210 or above) can apply to be exempted from taking “Fundamental Chinese”. International students in English extensive programs must take “foreign language platform courses”, but are exempt from taking “Fundamental Chinese”.
4. International students in programs of humanities (excluding public management programs) are exempt from taking “mathematics platform courses” (Advanced Mathematics B) and “physics platform courses” (College Physics B). International students in programs of foreign languages can apply for an exempt from taking “mathematics platform courses” (Advanced Mathematics B) and “biology and chemistry platform courses” (General Biology).
The adjustments made in the DUT International Class Student (Undergraduates) Training Curriculum (new):
The adjustments in the required elective courses:
International students in the DUT International Class must take “Fundamental Chinese” and “A Survey of China” and complete the required 7 academic credits. They shall also complete another 6 academic credits by taking necessary “law, economics, and management platform courses” and “humanities, social sciences, and arts platform courses”. In total, International students in the DUT International Class shall complete 13 academic credits for elective courses (8 less compared to the old training curriculum).
II、Electives
1. International students who study for a degree are required to select online the courses for the next semester according to Course Selection Guidelines for DUT Undergraduates. The selected courses once approved officially will be regarded as a set training curriculum to keep a record of the students’ academic performance and the academic units they have completed in order to graduate.
Those who do not select their programs’ required courses or who fail to meet the course selection requirements are not allowed to attend the courses and take the course exams.
2. Once approved officially, the selected courses cannot be quitted or changed without permission. In the cases of improper selection, the students concerned shall report to Academic Administration for approval in order to quit the courses wrongly selected.
International students shall take on time all the courses selected as required and complete all the academic activities related to the courses. Those who fail to take the course examination without going through the course quitting procedure will be regarded as absentees from the examination.
III、Course Retaking
1. International students will be assessed for all the courses they have selected (including the practical teaching activities such as experiments, field trip, etc.). Those who cannot pass will have to re-sit the exam. Those who fail the re-sit must retake the course. The students cannot get the academic units unless they complete all the required academic activities for a retaking and pass the course exam. The grades will be recorded as “retake grades” in their academic performance record.
2. International students who need a re-take of a course can take it with students of the next year who are in the same program, or they can attend a course retaking class if it is offered.
3. Practical teaching activities (such as experiments, project design, field trip, etc.) should generally be made up or re-performed in the next year. Engineering Project training programs can be re-performed separately according to the nature of the programs.
4. International students who need to retake a course are required to select online the course during the designated course selection period. Instructor of the course should be informed in advance so that the retaking can be better arranged. In case the course retaken is arranged at the same hours as the regular courses the students must take, the students shall ask for the instructor’s permission to complete the assignment as required and take the necessary exams without attending some classes.
5 Academic Performance Assessment and Record of Grades
I、Academic Performance Assessment
1. Academic performance assessment is a must for all the required courses in international students’ programs and the related academic activities. Only those who are assessed as qualified can obtain the corresponding academic credits.
2. The assessment of international students’ performance in the courses and the related academic activities takes different forms, including close book examination, open book examination, written test, oral test, term paper, course project, or a combination of those. Assessment for most courses uses a percentage grading system. For certain practical academic activities (such as lectures, field trip, etc.) the assessment can use a non-graded system with only a P (pass) or F (fail).
3. The final grades will include both the results of the final exam and tests (quizzes) taken in class.
4. International students shall complete their assignments or experiment reports as required by the instructor. Those whose performance is poor and those fail to hand in more than 1/3 of the assignments (reports) accumulatively will not be allowed to take the course exam, and will get a zero as their final grade.
5. Students who fail the exams can re-sit them.
II、Rules for Assessment
1. International students should take the exams on the specific time and date as posted by the university. Those who fail to take the exams without giving valid reasons will be regarded as absentees.
2. Students who cannot take the exams for extenuating reasons shall apply to the Academic Affairs Office of their faculty (school) for an extension one day in advance on working days. The application will be submitted to the deputy dean of the faculty (school) who is in charge of academic affairs for approval and hereafter handed in to Academic Administration to put on file.
3. Students who are hospitalized due to health problems and cannot sit for the final examination shall provide certificates or diagnosis from the hospital to apply for a deferment of the examination. The application materials will be submitted to the Academic Administration for verification and approval.
4. Students who breach the rules for examination or cheat will get a zero for the test. The university will take necessary disciplinary actions according to the nature and degree of the misbehavior.
5. Students who re-sit the exam but fail are required to retake the course.
6 Attendance and Discipline
1. International students shall register in person before the date specified on academic calendar of the year. Attendance assessment will start from the first day of a new semester.
2. International students shall take part in the required academic activities on time as stipulated in their training curriculum. Those who cannot attend a class for valid reasons shall ask for a leave in advance. The leave without an official permission will be regarded as an unexcused absence. For absent students the instructors can take necessary disciplinary actions including warning, disqualifying from taking the exams or other penalties according to the nature or frequency of absences.
3. Students who cannot attend class due to health problems or for other valid reasons shall go through the excused absence application procedure in advance for approval. Except for cases of acute diseases or emergencies, applications ex post facto will not be accepted as valid.
7 Major Transfer
I、Qualifications for Major Transfer
1. International students generally shall complete their study in the programs in which they are admitted. Only students in the following cases are eligible to apply for major transfer.
(1)Students who after being admitted are diagnosed by the university hospital or hospitals of Class A, Grade two or above with the illness that will prevent them from continuing their study in their current major but will not affect their study in a different major.
(2)Students who for certain special difficulties or objective reasons cannot continue their study without changing their major.
2. International students are not allowed to change their major under the following circumstances.
(1)Students who have been in their current programs for less than one semester.
(2)Students who are in their second year of undergraduate study or above.
(3)Students who cannot give extenuating reasons for a major transfer.
II、Procedure for Major Transfer
1. International students who need a major transfer shall apply in person with an application in written form for the approval of both the deputy dean of the faculty (school) in which they are pursuing their current programs and the deputy dean of the faculty (school) they wish to be transferred to. With the approval of both deputy deans who are in charge of academic affairs in their respective faculty (school) the application will be submitted to the Academic Administration for verification and approval.
2. The major transfer procedures should be conducted by the international students before the beginning of a new semester.
3. For international students who have been officially approved to change their major, the first-year and second-year courses that they have been selected will be kept and recorded as in their original Training Curriculum. The students’ second-year and third-year training curriculum should be adjusted according to the requirements for compulsory and selective courses of the new programs (majors). For the courses required by the new program that the transferred students fail to take in the first and second year, the deputy dean of the faculty (school) where the students will pursue their new programs should decide whether the they need to make up for the courses or not.
8 Temporary Suspension of Study, Resumption of Study, and Discontinuing Study
I、Temporary Suspension of Study
Students are eligible to take a Temporary Suspension of Study under any of the following circumstances.
(1)Students who are diagnosed by hospitals of Class A, Grade two or above with the illness that will take over two months in one semester for medical treatment.
(2)Students who ask for leave for over one month accumulatively in one semester.
(3)Students who request Temporary Suspension of Study with extenuating reasons, or whom the university consider necessary to take it.
Applicants shall complete the Application Form of Temporary Suspension of Study and submit it together with other required materials to the Administrative Office of the faculty or school where their academic programs are conducted for the verification of the international student coordinator and the approval of the deputy dean of the faculty (school) who is in charge of academic affairs. The International Student Office of International Education will verify the application and hand it in to the university’s Academic Administration for approval.
(4)The application for Temporary Suspension of Study should be made semester by semester, and the accumulative total period of suspension should not exceed three years. The international students shall apply for suspension one month before the end of each semester. Once the application is officially approved they will no longer enjoy the status as an enrolled student. The university will retain the applicants’ student status during the suspension, and the suspension period will not be counted into the duration of study.
(5)The international students who take a suspension without going through required procedures will be regarded as taking a voluntary Permanent Suspension of Study. The university will hereby terminate their student status.
(6)The international students who are to go back to home countries to perform military service shall observe the following regulations.
①The international students who are required by the law of their home countries to perform military service are eligible to apply for a temporary suspension of studies for military service.
②The international students who apply for a temporary suspension of studies for military service shall have completed the courses of the first year and obtained the credits.
③An application in written form should be submitted together with a recruitment notice or a military service certificate issued by the government of the applicants’ home countries.
II、Resumption of Study
1. International students who apply for the resumption of study after the end of an approved suspension shall provide the certificates from specified hospitals to confirm their recovery.
2. After the end of the suspension, international students can make application for the resumption of study two days before the new semester begins. They shall bring their application form for the resumption of study, a certificate of temporary suspension of study, and recovery certificates from the specified hospitals to International Student Office, School of International Education for verification. The application materials will be handed in to the university’s Academic Administration for approval before the students can resume their study.
3. International students who should take a temporary suspension of study due to health problems but refuse to go through the suspension application procedure, or those who are under a temporary suspension of study, are not allowed to take regular courses, take part in the academic performance assessment, and get the grades.
III、Discontinuing Study
1. International Students in the following cases should apply to discontinue their study.
(1)Students who get less than a total of 9 credits each semester on average for their major courses from the fifth semester on.
(2)Students who fail to apply for the resumption of study within two weeks after the end of a temporary suspension or the period of retaining their status as an enrolled student.
(3)Students who apply for resumption of study but who fail to pass the reexamination of the university; Students who are diagnosed by hospitals of Class A, Grade two or above with the diseases, injuries or disabilities that will prevent them from continuing their study in DUT; Students who suffer from infectious diseases or mental problems that will make it inappropriate for them to stay in China.
(4)Students who have anti-China rhetoric or behavior during period of study and bring about serious consequences.
(5)Students who breach the laws or codes of China and are punished by the public security office or judicial authorities with a detention.
(6)Sudents who leave the school and miss the academic activities specified by the university for two weeks or above without asking for a leave or being approved for a leave.
(7)Students who fail to register within two weeks after the specified registration date without valid reasons.
(8)Students who do not have an X visa (study) but fail to complete a visa conversion within specified time; Students who have been punished two times or more by Entry & Exit Management Section of Public Security Bureau due to visa problems.
(9)Students who miss 50 accumulative course hours without asking for a leave.
(10)Students who apply to discontinue their study.
2. Students in the above cases who apply to discontinue their study will not be regarded as being penalized.
3. International students can apply in person to discontinue study or the faculty (school) can submit an explanation document in their behalf. An Application Form for Discontinuing Study should be filled in and be signed by the deputy dean of the faculty (school) who is in charge of the academic affairs. The application materials together with the Student Information Record and other relevant document will be handed in to the Academic Administration of the university for verification and approval.
4. International students who apply to quit their study will receive a document of discontinuing study. Relevant certificates will be issued according to the length of and academic performance upon application in person. Students who are deprived of their status as an enrolled student will only have a document of discontinuing study.
5. Students who are deprived of their status as an enrolled student or whose study is discontinued officially are not allowed to apply for resumption of study.
6. For other issues concerning students who discontinue their study, the following regulations shall be observed.
(1)Students whose application for discontinuing study is approved shall go through the visa and residence procedures as well as relevant school leaving procedures and leave the school within the time limit (usually two weeks) as specified in the notice of discontinuing study.
(2)Students who are expelled from the university due to violations of Chinese laws or a breach of university rules and regulations will not get a refund of their tuition fees. Those who discontinue their study for other reasons will be refunded according to the standards specified in the refund policy for international undergraduate students.
9 Graduation, Completion, and Incompletion
I、Graduation
International students who complete all the studies with required credits within the prescribed length of schooling and meet all the requirements for graduation will be verified by the university as being able to graduate. A Certificate of Graduation and a Bachelor Degree Certificate will be issued.
II、Completion of Study
1. International students who owe a maximum of 10 credits according to the required amount of credits stipulated in the university syllabus within the prescribed length of schooling will be issued a Certificate of Completion instead of a Certificate of Graduation.
2. International students in the case of completion of study (excluding those who have reached the longest allowable study time) can apply for returning to the university to resit the examination(s) (usually with the students of the next year) for credits they fail to obtain previously. Students who pass the re-examinations and obtain the required amount of credits can change their Certificate of Completion to Certificate of Graduation. A bachelor’s degree will be conferred if the students further meet all the requirements for degree conferral in DUT. Those who fail to make applications within the stated period of time or those who are not able to pass the examination(s) within the stated period of time are NOT qualified to resit the examination(s) once again.
3. International students in the case of completion of study shall pay necessary fees as stipulated in the university syllabus if they are to apply to resit examination(s).
III、Incompletion of Study
International students who cannot continue their study in the university for certain reasons but who have obtained 25% of the required amount of credits specified in their cultivation plan can receive a Certificate of Incompletion. Those who have obtained less credits can only receive a Certificate of Study.
IV、Extend the length of schooling
International students who have not obtained required credits upon the examination of graduation qualification can apply for an extension of study by going through necessary procedures. The application should be made by the students themselves, verified by the deputy dean of the faculty (school) who is in charge of academic affairs, and submitted to the Academic Administration of the university for approval.
V、Degree Conferral
A Bachelor's degree will be conferred to the international students who meet the requirements of the Implementation Ordinance of DUT on Bachelor’s Degree Conferral.
