October 16, 2023 – The 2023 "Chinese Language Teaching Idols" International Chinese Language Teaching Skills Best Practices of Northeast Region Exchange Event, jointly organized by the International Chinese Education Professional Master's Degree Education Guidance Committee and Center for Language Education and Cooperation, and hosted by Northeast Normal University, concluded successfully. Dalian University of Technology's student and teacher teams achieved prestigious honors during this exchange activity.
In this event, the student team and teacher team from Dalian University of Technology were respectively awarded the titles of "Chinese Teaching Idols Team" and "Chinese Teaching Popularity Star." Associate Professor Xu Dan, the instructor for the student team, received the "Outstanding instructor Award."
The student team, led by Associate Professor Xu Dan from SIE, consisted of four master's degree students majoring in International Chinese Education: Lin Yuqing, Liu Wenlu, Li Yuhuan, and Zhang Shuting. Through collaborative efforts and meticulous preparation, the team successfully completed various tasks such as pre-event preparation, video recording, and post-production. Based on the "production-oriented approach" , the team chose the "harmony" culture in Suzhou classical gardens as the teaching theme. Through active and effective interaction between teachers and students, the team directed students to understand the cultural spirit of "harmony" embodied in the concrete elements of Chinese culture.
The on-site expert reviewers highly praised the team's work. Professor Zhang Xiaotao, the Dean of the School of International Education at Harbin Normal University, commended the team's work, noting the highlights in course design and conceptualization. He specifically mentioned that the course effectively integrated cultural knowledge, cultural understanding, cross-cultural awareness, and cultural attitudes. Through the comparison between Suzhou gardens and overseas gardens as well as the overseas dissemination of Suzhou classical gardens, the course conveyed a cultural attitude of appreciating beauty and a spirit of inclusiveness.
The teacher team, led by Associate Professor Guo Xiaoyu from SIE, included teachers of Song Peng, Li Yining, Liu Pinshan, and Song Lihua. The team adopted "Advanced Chinese" as the reference textbook, employed the SPOC teaching mode, and applied the OBE teaching philosophy. Emphasizing student-centeredness, outcome orientation, and continuous improvement, the team delved deep into the three stages of pre-class, in-class, and post-class, closely integrating language knowledge with language practice in the course design. On-site expert reviewers found the topic innovative and believed that the entire course design laid a solid foundation for students' authentic communication, contributing to the improvement of the Chinese self-learning ability of international students.
The "Chinese Language Teaching Idols" International Chinese Language Teaching Skills Best Practices is a flagship project of the China Foreign Language Exchange and Cooperation Center, aiming to strengthen the training of international Chinese education professionals and the construction of teaching staff, providing a platform for the exchange and sharing of teaching experiences. This event was the first offline exchange held after the pandemic. During this exchange, the teacher and student teams from Dalian University of Technology adhered to the theme of "Creating High-Quality Chinese Classrooms," exchanging experiences with outstanding teams from other universities in the Northeast region and sharing teaching insights.
SIE at Dalian University of Technology places great emphasis on the development of international Chinese education teachers and the cultivation of practical abilities for graduate students. To enhance teaching abilities and improve classroom quality, the school provides diverse support and training for teachers and students. The achievements won at this event reflect the school's recent efforts and continuous commitment in this area.
