On October 29, 2024, the 2024 "Chinese Language Teaching Idols" Northeast Regional International Chinese Teaching Skills Exchange Event, co-organized by the International Chinese Language Education Graduate Degree Guidance Committee and the Center for Language Education and Cooperation of the Ministry of Education, and hosted by Northeast Normal University, successfully concluded. In this event, the Dalian University of Technology teacher team won the titles of "Chinese Language Teaching Idols Team" and "Best Smart Education Team," while the student team earned the "Best Teaching Innovation Team" award.
The teacher team was led by Associate Professor Guo Hanning from the School of International Education, with team members Gao Jing, Ma Ying, and Song Lihua. The team’s teaching practice was based on the unique general education course History of Chinese Science and Technology offered to international degree-seeking students. For the exchange activity, they selected The Nine Chapters on the Mathematical Art, revered as the foremost ancient Chinese mathematical text, as the central teaching theme. The team utilized a blended online-offline teaching model, with "active learning" as the core teaching philosophy. Their approach created contexts that fostered complex meaning negotiation and higher-order thinking, guiding students through independent thinking and cooperative learning to explore the cultural connotations and concepts behind The Nine Chapters on the Mathematical Art. The panel of experts praised the team's teaching design for its ingenuity, engaging activities, and its success in cultivating students' higher-order thinking abilities and global citizenship awareness. They also recognized the course construction behind the exchange, which not only facilitated the sharing of skills, concepts, and methods but also reflected the effort and thoughtful planning invested by the teachers in developing the course.
The student team was led by Dr. Wang Jiatian from the School of International Education, with members Ouyang Lu, Gai Hefang, and Hirao RIRI (Japan), all Master's students in the International Chinese Language Education program. The team focused on the practical application of Chinese for e-commerce, specifically in the context of "store promotions." Through activities such as scenario simulations, case studies, and hands-on practice, they effectively guided students to understand and apply knowledge of store promotions in e-commerce operations. They incorporated a diverse evaluation system, including peer and self-assessments, to help students enhance their problem-solving abilities, improve through reflection, and efficiently address challenges in real-world applications. The expert panel commended the team’s work for embodying the principle of applying what is learned in meaningful and enjoyable ways. Their teaching design, based on reverse design and forward implementation, integrated real-life business Chinese cases and emphasized language skills while encouraging students to think critically and engage in practical operations. The overall teaching approach not only enabled students to acquire language skills through sales practice but also highlighted the practical and professional aspects of language, fostering students' interest and enthusiasm for learning Chinese in a fun and relaxed environment.
In recent years, the School of International Education has adhered to an outcome-oriented approach, continuously strengthening its teaching initiatives. It has launched programs such as "Excellent Teachers, Excellent Learning, Excellent Courses," conducted the selection of high-quality courses and classrooms, and organized the "Seeking the Path" teaching salon, among other brand activities. The school has also developed a progressive practical training system for Master’s students in International Chinese Language Education. Supported by these strengthened efforts, the school has achieved a series of notable teaching outcomes. Moving forward, the school will continue to align talent development and teaching construction, further enhancing the impact of Dalian University of Technology's international Chinese education and creating high-quality teaching resources for overseas Chinese studies.
