The Talk about China by International Alumni-The Beginning of Winter

November 8, 2023  Click:[]

On this day of Beginning of Winter, I would like to share my story in China. I'm Dr. Qasim Abbas and I come from Pakistan. I completed my Ph.D. in Microelectronics and Solid-State Electronics from Dalian University of Technology in July 2020. It was even beyond my imaginations that I would fall in love with the country where I am going to study. Later, I anchored my career in China while joining as Assistant Professor at Yibin University, Yibin, Sichuan. Afterwards, I started working as R&D Engineer in Fujian Super-tech Advanced Materials Company Limited, Longyan, Fujian. Research is an integral part of my job here, particularly about thin films, nanometer materials, vacuum coatings, polymer coatings, etc. As a foreigner working in China, I have been fortunate to experience the diverse opportunities and immense growth potential that this country offers. The High-Level Talent award presented by the Fujian Government serves as a testament to my dedication and impact. This also symbolizes merit and equality in terms of achievement and recognition. Myriad grounds were there to settle in here, including, remarkable scientific development, fast-pacing research, transforming technical growth, fostering life facilities, lively & friendly Chinese people and cuisine. Chinese food is rich with seasonal and occasional dishes, whose taste is unforgettable.

The Beginning of Winter typically falls around November 7th each year, signaling the start of colder winter weather. As the 19th solar term, it marks an important moment when people in China adjust their lifestyles, focusing on health, food, and other preparations needed for the chilly season. This solar term serves as a reminder to cherish and harmonize with the natural rhythms of the Earth.

The Beginning of Winter holds cultural significance and is recognized through various traditional practices. Many people engage in rituals to honor ancestors and seek blessings for the coming winter. In addition, people often take part in activities such as making and eating Tangyuan (glutinous rice dumplings), a symbol of reunion and warmth during the colder months. Observing these traditions helps people maintain a sense of connection with their heritage and fosters community spirit.

It also marks a pivotal transition in seasons and serves as a reminder to embrace the changes that lie ahead. Let us embrace this 19th Solar Term – The Beginning of Winter with cheers.
